Fusion energy: Harnessing the power of a man-made sun

Jul 30 2017

Winchester Discovery Centre
Sun, 30 Jul 2017, 15:00 – 16:00

Further information: Today nuclear power plants use fission to power the national grid, producing tonnes of radioactive waste every year. In this talk you will learn how scientists plan to use fusion power, the same process that powers the Sun, to provide a safer and cleaner alternative to fission.

Thu, 27 Jul 2017, 10:00 – 16:00

Members and physicists in business are invited to attend this exciting town meeting to shape an IOP special interest group which will support entrepreneurs and small-medium sized enterprises taking physics-based ideas, products and services to market. The proposed group will enable members to build supportive networks, share knowledge and explore collaborations as well as access business support, finance and affordable workspace.

Does Mr Entropy need Phoenix Wright?

Jul 26 2017

Cavendish Lecture Theatre, Lancaster University, Lancaster, LA1 4YW
Wed, 26 Jul 2017, 16:00 – 17:00

Further information: Entropy is one of the most fascinating concepts introduced in physics in the last two centuries. Keeping track of its value enables one to discriminate past events from future ones or, in other words, to keep an eye on the so-called "arrow of time". This unique feature comes at the cost of the notorious difficulty to grasp what entropy is all about or what it actually measures.

Very High Energy Electron Radiotherapy : Medical & Accelerator Physics Aspects Towards Machine Realisation

Jul 24 2017

The Cockcroft Insitute, Daresbury Laboratory, Keckwick Lane, WA4 4AD
Mon, 24 Jul 2017, 09:00 – 13:30

This workshop will explore fundamental issues associated with the development of a radiotherapy machine capable of delivering 250MeV electrons at a high dose.
