The eastern regions of Ukraine are better supplied with water resources than the Crimean Peninsula. However, even in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts canals and aqueducts play an important role in the redistribution water in the region. Water-intensive industry, large cities are located quite far from the country's largest waterways. Artificial aqueducts were built to feed industrial regions. The military conflict has been making adjustments to the water supply system since 2014. To date, large cities in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities partially receive water from canals that come from the Joint Forces Operation area (JFO). The regularity of supply, and most importantly the quality and safety of such water is in great question. The hostilities changed the structure of many industrial facilities. Large tanks intended for cooling, purification, accumulation of water were partially or completely emptied. The state of the water level in such artificial reservoirs can be an indicator of the overall level of functioning of the region's industry. Climate change is also a problem in the region. The level of reservoirs that are not directly related to canals or industrial activities is changingtoo That is why it is important to constantly monitor and analyze the dynamics of surface water levels in natural and artificial reservoirs of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts (in the territories controlled and not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities). Such studies are related to the assessment of the environmental situation and national security.
