Further information: Today nuclear power plants use fission to power the national grid, producing tonnes of radioactive waste every year. In this talk you will learn how scientists plan to use fusion power, the same process that powers the Sun, to provide a safer and cleaner alternative to fission.

Now in its 5th year, the Winchester Science Festival will be held at the Winchester Discovery Centre on 28th-30th July. The festival is the working project of a not-for-profit organisation, the Winchester Science Foundation, and will be full of hands-on exhibits and will provide plenty of entertainment, including scientific talks.

The final talk of the festival will be delivered by Chantal Nobs, a committee member of the IoP South Central Branch. Chantal will discuss the processes of nuclear fission and fusion, with opportunities for audience participation, and the potential benefits a fusion power plant would provide.
